Area Resolutions Denied at PA GOP Winter Meeting

PA GOP met this past Friday and Saturday at the Hershey Lodge to conduct its Winter Meeting.  SUNACRW would like to thank several state committeemen from central Pennsylvania for their attempts to have the party formally recognize conservative Republican principles via the resolution process.  The issues presented in their resolutions address important priorities of SUN Area Council of Republican Women.

Northumberland County State GOP Committeeman Donald J. Ely submitted an anti-amnesty resolution.  It called upon the Republican Party to affirm its commitment to the rule of law, to protect the American worker from cheap immigrant labor, to beware of repeating past immigration mistakes, and to work for the defeat of S.744 (known as the McCain-Schumer or “Gang of 8” bill).  Unfortunately, Mr. Ely’s proposal was rejected by the Resolutions Committee on Friday afternoon.

Lycoming County State GOP Committeeman Dave Huffman’s resolution would have asked the Legislature to put procedures into place to provide a public accounting of certain WAMs (Walking Around Money) in the recently signed Transportation Bill (HB1060).  Mr. Huffman wanted PA GOP to support adding transparency by requiring an annual review of how transportation dollars were spent and if the provisions of the bill had been implemented to benefit all areas of  the Commonwealth.  He called for an immediate online accounting of WAMs that go exclusively to designated legislators.  Mr. Huffman’s attempt to bring this resolution to the entire Committee was rebuffed.

Centre County State GOP Committeeman Paul Kozlovsky offered a resolution opposing Common Core State Standards, including all variations now being implemented in Pennsylvania schools under other names: Pennsylvania Common Core Standards and Pennsylvania Core Standards.  Mr. Kozlovsky’s resolution called upon the PA GOP to push the State Legislature and Governor Corbett for passage of Republican led bills: HB 1551, HB1552, HB1553 and HB1555.  Further, it called for the discontinuation of funding for programs that are aligned with Common Core and would have required PA GOP to make this action known to the Governor, Legislature, Department of Education and the State Board of Education.  Mr. Kozlovsky’s resolution was disapproved by the Resolutions Committee.

SUNACRW extends sincere thanks for the efforts of these men to uphold core Republican principles.

February Meeting: Parental Rights in America

SUNACRW will meet on Thursday evening, February 6th at 6:30 pm.

Our meeting topic is Parental Rights in the US.  Do you know the U.S. Constitution does not state parents’ explicit right to make decisions for their children?  What has been assumed as God-given rights for generations is being eroded by increasing intervention of the state, courts and medical community often with little recourse.

We will watch a short documentary, Overruled, and have discussion with Jodi Ferris, whose family was harmed by an overzealous hospital.  Mrs. Ferris currently serves as the Pennsylvania State Director of Convention of the States.

Common Core Action Needed

The opposition to Common Core is alive and well.  And yes, it is well-informed.  That’s what makes it so frustrating when in conversation with our elected officials it’s obvious that they are the ones with incomplete information or sometimes simple unwillingness to learn the truth.

The battle continues on many fronts.  This week the New York Educators Association passed a resolution in opposition to Common Core.  Why does that matter so much?  Well, New York is further into the process than many states and they have found it nearly impossible for teachers to teach and students to learn.  Further the NY assessments actually show a decrease in educational achievement!  Why would we spend time and money to bring these same results to Pennsylvania?

Yet here in the Commonwealth, the Department of Education is attempting to pull a fast one.  It has mixed up the objectives a bit, rephrased a few items and renamed the program in an attempt to institute something that we oppose.  Now many elected officials are confused because they’ve been told this is a new program, not Common Core.

Action is needed to stop the movement being made by DOE and school districts.  Dr. Peg Luksik, who has been educating Pennsylvanians for over 30 years on the attempts to turn education into a one-size fits all process, is once again a guiding light in the battle to defeat Common Core.  Please see her recent post that lists the things that we must say and do.

This is  the ideal time to make an impact as candidates are looking for your vote.  Before you give it, make sure they are worthy of it.  The future of country and our children is at stake.

Pro-Life Strategy

SUNACRW believes the writers of the Declaration of Independence got it right when they put the “Right to Life” first in the list of unalienable rights. There simply cannot be a right to Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness without first having Life.

While Republicans are accused of a “War on Women” it is indeed pro-abortions advocates who demand that women have the right to take away the most basic of human rights: Life.

At last week’s RNC Winter Meeting the Republican National Committee approved a resolution that directs Republican candidates and party operatives to approach campaigns with open support for Life. They are instructed to be vocal and fight back against those who attempt to silence them on our party’s anti-abortion/pro-life position. We applaud the RNC.

RESOLUTION ON REPUBLICAN PRO-LIFE STRATEGY

Whereas, The Democrats have waged a deceptive “War on Women” attack against Republican pro-life candidates, demonizing them and manipulating American voters;

Whereas, The Republican Party is proud to stand up for the rights of the unborn and believe all Americans have an unalienable right to life as stated in The Declaration of Independence;

Whereas, Pro-life Republicans should fight back against deceptive rhetoric regardless of those in the Republican Party who encourage them to stay silent;

Whereas, Candidates who stay silent on pro-life issues do not identify with key voters, fail to alert voters to the Democrats’ extreme pro-abortion stances, and have lost their elections;

Whereas, According to the extensive polling conducted by Gallup since 1975, many Republican stances regarding abortion garner at least 60 % support from the public and across the political spectrum:

 • 87% support informed-consent laws about certain possible risks of the abortion procedure;
• 80% support banning abortion during the 3rd trimester;
• 71% support parental consent laws;
• 69% support imposing a 24-hour wait period before an abortion;
• 64% of Americans support banning abortion during the 2nd trimester;
• 64% support banning partial-birth abortion;
• 64% support spousal notification laws that require the husband to be simply notified if his wife seeks an abortion;

Whereas, Staying silent fails because this strategy allows Democrats to define the Republican brand and prevents the Republican Party from taking advantage of widely supported pro-life positions listed above to attract traditional and new values voters; and

Whereas, Staying silent fails to alert voters to the Democrats’ extreme pro-abortion stances, which voters are repelled by; therefore let it be

RESOLVED, The Republican National Committee condemns the Democrats’ deceptive “war on women” rhetoric;

RESOLVED, The Republican National Committee will support Republican pro-life candidates who fight back against Democratic deceptive “war on women” rhetoric by pointing out the extreme positions on abortion held by Democratic opponents;

RESOLVED, The Republican National Committee will not support the strategy of Republican pro-life candidates who stay silent in the face of such deceptive rhetoric; and,

RESOLVED, The Republican National Committee urges all Republican pro-life candidates, consultants, and other national Republican Political Action Committees to reject a strategy of silence on the abortion issue when candidates are attacked with “war on women” rhetoric.
