Paradise?

Senator Tom Harkin returned from a trip to Cuba singing the praises of the communist country’s healthcare and system.  In response, Republican Senator Marco Rubio went to the floor of the U.S. Senate to correct the record.

It’s A Girl!

“It’s a girl!” may be an exuberant phrase uttered when finding that one is expecting a little bundle of pink joy, but increasingly that exclamation is not one of happiness.  Sex selection abortion is on the rise in the Unites States and other western counties.  It’s A Girl is a documentary about the practice in the most populous countries in the world.  The agony and dispassion are equally heart wrenching in this trailer.

Religious Freedom

Conestoga Wood Specialties based in Pennsylvania with plants in Beavertown and Beaver Springs, Snyder County is one of several companies embroiled in controversy over the birth control mandates included in The Affordable Care Act, also known as Obamacare.  Owners Norman and Samuel Hahn are Mennonites whose religious principles prohibit the use of abortifacient birth control methods covered in the healthcare law.  Under penalty of $100 per day per employee the Hahns determined to stand for their religious freedom.  With approximately 1000 employees Conestoga’s fine, if assessed, would prohibit the company from continuing to do profitable business.

In a related case the David Green family, owners of Hobby Lobby, also oppose covering the abortifacients in their employee insurance policies.  Hobby Lobby owns over 560 stores in 41 states and employs 21,000.  If the ACA fine were collected from Hobby Lobby it too would be unable to continue business as usual.  In both cases the devastating loss of employment would be a minor consequence when compared to the loss of religious freedom.

Conestoga and Hobby Lobby are awaiting their oral arguments to be heard at the US Supreme Court on March 25.

George Washington: Father of His Country

Congressman Henry Lee’s eulogy reminds us of the character and leadership of America’s first president on the anniversary of his birth in 1732.

First in war—first in peace—and first in the hearts of his countrymen, he was second to none in the humble and enduring scenes of private life; pious, just, humane, temperate, and sincere; uniform, dignified, and commanding, his example was as edifying to all around him as were the effects of that example lasting. To his equals he was condescending, to his inferiors kind, and to the dear object of his affections exemplarily tender; correct throughout, vice shuddered in his presence, and virtue always felt his fostering hand; the purity of his private character gave effulgence to his public virtues. His last scene comported with the whole tenor of his life—although in extreme pain, not a sigh, not a groan escaped him; and with undisturbed serenity he closed his well-spent life. Such was the man America has lost—such was the man for whom our nation mourns.
